If you have been seeking learning support for your child, you may have seen this title before. But what does it mean? What does an educational psychologist do?
As someone who has worked as an educational psychologist for many years, I can understand the confusion. So I wanted to explain what exactly the role entails and how you can benefit from the help of an educational psychologist.
As a licensed educational psychologist, I provide many services. Mainly, I apply psychology knowledge and practices to educational environments. I can use my unique background and insight to provide support to students and educators.
Here are some of the services I provide as an educational psychologist.
Testing and Diagnosis
A huge part of my job is performing educational assessments. Educational assessments are tests performed to find out what challenges your student might be facing. An educational assessment can screen for learning disorders like dyslexia or ADHD. They can also be used to see if your child has auditory processing or language comprehension disorders.
The assessments are performed over several visits and through multi-level testing processes. They gather an understanding of the entire student. Since every individual is unique, every test looks a little different.
Oftentimes, the assessments can lead to a diagnosis. Information from the assessment can also help me identify processing disorders and language comprehension disorders.
Develop Educational Programs or Plans
If a student is struggling in school, I can help create a plan for what they may need to succeed. I can use my understanding of your student’s learning processes and find what works best for your student. This can mean helping implement accommodations in a student’s learning or providing recommendations for the best way to support a student while they work on learning new material.
I can also provide input for a child’s IEP (Individualized Education Plan). I can be a part of your child’s IEP team upon your invitation to help create a plan for your student’s learning.
Overall, I strive to foster success in students. I can take into account a student’s learning strengths and weaknesses and find ways for that student to complete their learning goals.
My position outside the school setting can help me understand a student thoroughly. I can understand how background, potential learning disabilities, and learning styles will affect a student. This allows me to create and implement plans that will get students on track for success.
If you feel that your student or you could benefit from meeting with an educational psychologist, you can schedule a phone consultation with me today. We can discuss what would be the right fit for you.
