When I try to make a change of any type I find it best to have someone to be accountable to. This week I made you my accountability partner. I got busy with the usual daily routine and did not make progress organizing my space. I reminded myself that I said last week I would let you know about my progress. That was the catalyst I needed to start.
This week my focus turned to purging the old stuff. Before I could start organizing, I had to find space to move in. I noticed I had a lot of things, clothes, nick knacks, that were not being used. It’s funny how I was able to turn a blind eye to these things and just let them take up space. So I filled trash bins and made trips to the Discovery Shop and Goodwill to make my donations. This allowed me to reorganize my bedroom closet to improve the access of my most used things.
While preparing dinner I also noticed that my kitchen spices cupboard was overflowing. As I looked for some spices I needed for my meal, I realized there were duplicates. I also found more outdated spices than I like to admit. My freezer was another issue. I found items in there from close to a year ago, so into the trash they went and suddenly I found room again. It is mind boggling how long things remain pushed to the back of spaces and are forgotten about.
Do you find it hard to let go of things? You are not alone. I have to get into the right mindset in order to do this. If I’m holding on to something, I ask myself when the last time was I used it or wore it or had enjoyment in it. I find a year is what I use as my marker. Once I begin to look at my stuff with this mindset, the release of items begins to flow. Another way I change my thinking about those barely used items is to think that someone else may be able to use something that I don’t really need, and I donate it. Either way, there is a feeling of release from letting go of accumulated stuff.
Truth be told I didn’t get as much accomplished as I would have liked but I am happy with what I’ve done. That progress was achieved in part because I had accountability. Do you have someone in your life you can ask to hold you accountable to working toward for your goals?
